Code Appoints Creative Director & Planner

As a precursor to a number of key changes within the business, Manchester digital marketing agency Code Computerlove has promoted John Lander to Creative Director.

Siobhan Richmond has also moved up the ranks within the agency’s media team to become a planner, working closely with Planning Director Chris Heg on research and strategy for existing clients and new business.

John has worked for the agency for more than four years and most recently held the position as a group creative director, leading a number of award winning projects the agency has produced for clients including Original Source and Hed Kandi. Prior to Code John ran his own company and worked in both the UK and overseas, including London, Manchester, Liverpool, Amsterdam and the States.

His new role as Creative Director at Code will not be that of a typical creative director, as defined by traditional creative agencies. CEO of Code Computerlove Tony Foggett explained: “For some time now we’ve been questioning whether a creative director role still exists in a digital agency, when innovation is the new creative.

“As a progressive digital marketing agency, emulating the structures of our non-digital predecessors doesn’t really work. Digital as a medium is far more multi-dimensional than any other discipline; therefore, in order to produce the quality of work that we do, we not only need specialism but we need that specialism to operate more collaboratively than agencies have done previously. Innovation needs to be embedded in creativity and creativity needs to be applied across technologies – so creatives need to have the big ideas AND know that these will create a brand experience that consumers will want to share.

“John is that new breed of digital creative, who combines technical understanding with creativity to produce big ideas that can transcend platforms and media types. He’s a true all rounder, equally conversant in offline and online media; and we’d be foolish not to back this kind of talent. John is also an inspirational character, who will continue to be a thought leader and mentor within the business. John will help to drive and shape the up coming creative talent within the agency and will continue to ensure that our solutions have both desirability, but also brand-centricity built into the work.”

23-year old Siobhan Richmond has worked for Code since graduating in 2008. Having supported the channel marketing team on PPC, analytics, email and social media campaigns, she is also breaking new ground as a digital planner delivering insight and research across the agency’s new business function.

Tony Foggett added: “To achieve the right skills required for our agency and, importantly, the right attitude, we are making some fundamental changes within the business to develop a new breed of hybrid talent.”
