In the latest instalment of our ‘Day in the life…’ series we chat with Ian, who’s an Account Director here at Code.
Can you begin by telling me a bit about yourself and your role in the agency?
I started working at Code seven years ago as an Account Executive. I’m now an Account Director and currently manage accounts including Hillarys, First TransPennine Express, Chester Zoo and Benenden Health.
My role’s focused on looking after clients, understanding what they want and need, then providing them with a solution that will effectively meet their objectives.
Could you describe a typical day in the office?
My working day’s generally spilt between spending time in the office, and spending time with clients. When I’m in the office, I’m usually preparing client presentations and doing research for future projects.
An important part of my role is consistently reviewing what my clients are doing and how things are performing. This means I work closely with the Performance and Strategy teams to spot opportunities for improvement. I also spend a lot of time with the Delivery team to ensuring that projects are progressing in the right way.
What key skills do you think are most important in an Account Director?
A broad understanding around technology, audiences and strategic planning is a must.
Here at Code, it’s important that Account Directors have a good understanding of all the services we offer, whether it’s mobile app development, UX or design and build. You also need to have in-depth knowledge of the client’s needs, and the markets they operate in.
Most importantly, you need to be good with people. My role requires me to work well with internal teams to deliver projects, and also deal with stakeholders.
Can you tell us a bit about your background?
I started out working in the marketing department of a large retailer, where my role covered a mixture of online and offline activities. From early on in my career, I had an interest in a digital marketing, so I started to specialise in the digital side of things. This eventually led me to join Code.
Do you have a favourite part of your job?
Delivering results for clients is what motivates me. It’s such a good feeling when you recommend a change to a campaign or project that delivers a positive result.
What do you find the most challenging?
I think the most challenging thing is trying to ensure that clients are happy all the time. It’s such an important part of my job and sometimes requires a bit of juggling!
Is there a campaign or piece of work that you are particularly proud of, and why?
In general, I think it would have to be my longest-standing accounts, First TransPennine Express and Hillarys.
I’ve been working with First TransPennine Express to continually develop their digital offering for the past six years. During this time, we’ve delivered a number of projects that I’m proud of, primarily because of their positive impact on the business. The most recent example is the improvements we’ve been able to make to their mobile offering.
I am also really proud of the work we’ve done for Hillarys, who’ve been a client of ours since 2005. We have a great relationship with the client, which makes it a really enjoyable account to service.
How would you describe working for Code Computerlove?
Well, it’s obviously alright as I’ve been here seven years! But, seriously, I think I’ve been here so long because the business looks after its staff very well. Code’s continually growing, but we’re also very cohesive as a team.
Everyone is very passionate, and always strives to deliver the best possible work for our clients, and I think that’s what makes it such an enjoyable place to work.
What attributes are you looking for in a new team member?
Intelligence and a real passion for digital. We’re looking for someone who really cares about their work and is confident dealing with multiple clients and internal team
At the same time, we want someone who’s easy going and will fit in well with the team.
